Our Founder

In the Spirit of Blessed Edmund Rice

St. Edmund's takes its name and mission from Blessed Edmund Rice, the Irish founder of the Congregation of Christian Brothers, who devoted his life to the education of boys who had no other access to schooling. That same charism brought the Christian Brothers to Mazabuka in 1964, and continues to shape this school today.

School History

The story of St. Edmund's Secondary School, and the headteachers who have led it.

Our Founding

A School Built Over Generations

American Christian Brothers arrived in Mazabuka in 1964 to found St. Edmund's. Brothers from Ireland arrived in 1967 to continue the mission, and the school grew into one of the best-known Catholic boys' schools in Zambia. A fuller written history of the school will be added here by the school administration.

Our Founder & Founding Order

Edmund Rice & the Christian Brothers

The story of the man whose vision brought Catholic education to Mazabuka.

Blessed Edmund Rice

From Merchant to Founder

Edmund Ignatius Rice was born in 1762 in Callan, County Kilkenny, Ireland, into a farming family. He became a successful merchant in Waterford, and married Mary Elliot in 1785; she died young after the birth of their daughter, a loss that changed the course of Edmund's life. Moved by the poverty and lack of schooling he saw around him, he gave away his business to open a school for poor boys in Waterford in 1802. Other men joined him, and in 1820 Pope Pius VII approved their community as the Congregation of Christian Brothers, with Edmund elected its first Superior General in 1822. By 1825, Edmund and thirty Brothers were educating over 5,500 boys free of charge across Ireland. He died in 1844 at Mount Sion, Waterford, and was beatified by Pope John Paul II on 6 October 1996.

The Christian Brothers Come to Mazabuka

Christian Brothers from the United States first arrived in Mazabuka, then Northern Rhodesia, in 1964 to found St. Edmund's. In 1967, Brothers from Ireland arrived to continue the mission. The Zambian Region of the Christian Brothers, known as Mater Dei, was formally constituted in 1984. Today the Brothers serve across Zambia in Mazabuka, Livingstone, Lusaka, Kabwe, Mufulira, Kasama, Mongu and Lukulu.
